The Chrysanthemums of Lan Su Talk

Saturday, November 19, 2022 (1:00 PM - 2:00 PM) (PST)

Description

Lan Su Chinese Garden has grown its own mums for the Celebration of the Chrysanthemum for over 10 years. Get a behind the scenes look at our mums with Lan Su volunteer Janet Parenteau and Horticulturist Carla Lily. They will talk about the different types and styles of mums, their cultural significance, and how our collection has changed over the years. They will demonstrate how to grow a chrysanthemum from cuttings, and how styles such as cascades are developed.

Carla Lily has been a Horticulturist at Lan Su since June 2017. After moving to Portland from Minnesota in 2004, the great diversity of plants that grow in the Pacific Northwest inspired her to pursue degrees in Horticulture and Landscape Design (building on a foundation of Biology and French). Carla loves working to keep the garden healthy and beautiful, creating vignettes for visitors to discover, and answering questions about the garden and the plants. She's also fascinated with insects, and as coordinator of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program she finds natural ways to control insect pests, encourages beneficial insects, and raises mason bees to help with pollination of the garden.
