Travel and tourism have traditionally been major economic drivers in the Portland metropolitan region. As recently as 2019, tourism to the region accounted for $5.6 billion in aggregates sales and $277.8 million in tax revenue; the industry employed nearly 37,000 Portlanders, generating $1.6 billion in employment earnings.
Times have changed. Portland’s reputation—and its appeal as a tourist destination—have taken a major hit over the last two years. Driven by COVID-19, wildfires, political violence, and public safety concerns, increasing numbers of potential visitors view Portland as an unsafe and unwelcoming city.
What’s the plan for rebuilding Portland’s tourist reputation with regional, national, and international markets? What can local leaders do to shift the narrative about Portland? And what does the future look like for industries that are dependent on Portland being a desirable place to visit?
Our final Breakfast Forum for 2021 will explore these important issues. Our panel of travel and tourism experts will discuss the factors at play and share their plans for making Portland a destination city once again
