In October, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler proposed, and City Council approved, a series of ordinances that radically change the city’s approach to the regional homelessness crisis. These new policies outline an aggressive agenda to build 20,000 more units of affordable housing over the next decade, create new employment opportunities for house-less individuals, and prioritize mental health and substance abuse recovery services in the city budget. The plan also includes a ban on unsanctioned camping outside of designated sheltering facilities.

In the Alliance’s final Breakfast Forum of 2022, we’ll hear from elected officials as they share their perspective on why this policy represents the best long-term, humane solution to supporting Portland’s unhoused community. Moreover, they’ll outline a timeline for policy implementation, and identify critical support the City needs from Multnomah County, Metro and the State of Oregon.
